The personal papers in the collection include three Civil War diaries (dated Jan. 1-Nov. 28 1863, Jan. 1-Dec. 30 1864 and June 30, 1864-March 11, 1865); three notebooks, one of which is dated 1852 and contains Lothrop genealogy information; Historical Society of the First Regiment Iowa Cavalry Volunteers secretary's record for 1886-1889; correspondence (including three Civil War letters) dated from 1861 to 1894; autobiographical data; a history of the regiment including notes, roster lists, and letters from former members of the regiment; and miscellaneous printed historical papers and newspaper clippings. The regimental papers in the collection include an order and letter book of the First Regiment Iowa Cavalry dated April 5, 1863-July 15, 1864; records of courts martial; records of leaves granted; muster rolls, officers' organization materials; various orders; quartermaster reports; Company G report of Captain A.W. Hosford (Jan. 1866) and muster out rolls; George A. Custer's orders to whip H. Cure of the First Cavalry; three letters (1861) from Major E.W. Chamberlin; and Company E muster out rolls. The collection also contains various artifacts including badges, banners, and spurs belonging to Dr. Lothrop.

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania. According to family letters, Custer was named after George Armstrong, a minister, in his devout mother's hope that her son might join the clergy. Lothrop was a surgeon in the First Iowa Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War, also serving as the regiment's historian. After the war he took on the projects of writing a history of the First Cavalry and keeping members of the regiment in touch with each other.
